Every month, we are here to help you inspire your child with some season-appropriate pieces of music.
Listening to music is not only enjoyable but is also beneficial in development many skills including coordination and self-confidence that will continue to be useful for your child throughout their lives.
We’re turning up the heat a little with a few rocky numbers in this edition. Here is an extra special SCHOOL’S OUT version turned up to 11 to celebrate breaking up for summer!
1) Oasis, Whatever
You can tell Noel loved strings by the amount of tracks they appear on, whether up front like Masterplan or nestled nicely like Don’t Look Back in Anger. The YouTube video for Whatever is a great version of this shout along song from ’94, live with a big strings section courtesy of our friend Jools Holland on the beeb. Listen how well Noel’s guitar and the strings interact, they sound amazing. Which instrument do you think is takes the lead in this piece?

2) Arcade Fire, Wake Up!
A lot of Arcade Fire’s songs are about the times and experiences of when we are young. The arrangement for this version came about as a special request for the Where the Wild Things Are film, it manages to be huge but delicate at the same time. Arcade Fire are a big band with many different instruments working together to create an emotionally charged piece of music. How many instruments you can pick out? Don’t miss the harp!
3) Smashing Pumpkins, Tonight Tonight
The strings for the song were arranged by Billy Corgan & Audrey Riley, and recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Billy Corgan said that recording with a 30-piece string-section for the song “was probably one of the most exciting recording experiences I have ever had.” We’re not surprised, as the outcome is an incredibly beautiful piece of music. Cap duly doffed.
