As parents ourselves, we know that keeping children entertained throughout the school holidays is no mean feat, and how costs for attraction tickets can quickly add up. We thought we'd help out by sharing five exciting things to do with children in London this October Half Term which won't cost you a penny!

1: Take a spooky trip through Marble Hill

Explore the gardens of Twickenham's historic house at this breath-taking time of year, and experience the spookier side of Marble Hill in a Halloween Trail which features decorations from the onsite nursery. There’s a fun new playground too, along with plenty of space for fresh-air adventures.

Marble Hill, Twickenham, TW1 2NL

2. Decode pictures at The National Gallery

How do we look at pictures, and what can a painting really tell us? In these free interactive family tours you’re invited to join the Gallery’s friendly educational team to discover how to decode pictures by looking, questioning, and discussing together, using fun tips and tricks to unlock secrets hidden in plain sight.

3: Celebrate Japanese stories at the Young V&A

If you haven’t yet visited the awe-inspiring new Young V&A museum, then this October is the perfect opportunity! In celebration of the opening of the museum’s first exhibition, Japan: Myths to Manga, there are free creative events for all ages, inspired by the stories of the country. Come to Open Studio to contribute to a growing Origami Sculpture, or explore the Imagine Gallery and create and dress up as an anime character.

Wednesday 25 – Friday 27 October 2023
Young V&A, Bethnal Green, E2 9PA

4: Discover your new favourite authors at the Black British Book Festival

Championing emerging talent and offering the chance to hear from leading voices, this free family festival is Europe’s largest celebration of Black literature. Immerse yourself in a live drawing and reading session with Olivier-nominated playwright Trish Cooke, join Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse for an interactive session to celebrate her new picture book, and (our top pick, of course!) sing along to the captivating melodies of the ukulele with Annemarie Anang.

Friday 27 & Saturday 28 October 2023
Southbank Centre, SE1 8XX

5: Catch a free gig at Crystal Palace Park

Crystal Palace Park has just announced a new Sunday afternoon concert series, with free music for all on their recently restored historic Concert Platform - hailed as London’s most iconic bandstand. Come along to enjoy performances by amazing local talent: on 29th October it will be the turn of Swimmers Jackson and his band. If you want to make a day of it you will not be short of things to do, with the Park’s Food Market, City Farm, Maze, and Museum all open on Sundays and free of charge to visit.
