5 FREE Activities for Kids in Birmingham during February Half Term


As families gear up for Half Term and a break from school routines, as parents ourselves we understand the challenges of finding affordable and engaging activities to keep children entertained (especially if the weather's a bit dreary!)

So we've compiled a list of five brilliant and cost-free things to do with children Birmingham this February Half Term. We hope it's helpful!

1: Blast into Space at the Thinktank

Come along to the Birmingham Science Museum’s Thinktank theatre for a fun, family show about Our World from Space. Build the Sun, Moon, and Earth out of people to see how they move in space, discover how rockets take off, recreate the orbits of satellites, and learn how they pay a big role in wildlife conservation. The show is free, but there is an admission charge for the museum.

2: Be inspired at the Ikon Art Gallery

The Ikon is hosting a free children’s workshop to celebrate the launch of Ruth Millington’s new children’s book This Book Will Make You An Artist - an inspiring introduction to 25 artists from around the world. Come along to learn how to create a Cubist collage like Picasso or an abstract mobile like Klint. Combining fascinating art facts with the creativity and excitement of a craft session, this interactive and inspiring event will have children keen to pick up their pencils and get creative! Free but booking required.

3: Enjoy storytime with Britain’s youngest author

Jayce Joyce is a highly gifted 5-year-old from Birmingham whose first two books titled Jayce's Sweet Tooth and A Beach With No Sea were published on World Book Day 2023 when he was just 4 years old. During this exciting storytime session and activity workshop at the Library of Birmingham Jayce will be reading one of his books to children. Come along to delve into his enchanting world!

4. Rock on at Lapworth Museum of Geology!

From rocks and fossils to volcanoes, earthquakes, and even dinosaurs, the Lapworth Museum at the University of Birmingham captures the imagination of all visitors as they explore life over the past 3.5 billion years. The innovative galleries showcase exceptional objects from one of the UK’s most outstanding geological collections. Entry is totally free!

5: Find nature heroes at Sandwell Valley

Come along to the Sandwell Valley nature reserve - an oasis of green where wildlife thrives - during the half term holidays to discover some of their nature heroes. In a valentines-themed trail, seven hearts have been hidden around the reserve for young explorers to find. Behind each heart they can discover wild animals and plants before completing a fun wildlife activity or craft. Cost per trail is just £3, or you can visit the Sandwell Valley reserve for free.
