Holiday camps at The Strings Club are packed with a brilliant variety of interactive, creative, fun and screen-free activities. All the activities are designed by our Activities Manager, Lucy Hoy.
Lucy has impressive experience and qualifications and real passion for spreading the joy of music and connection through the timetables of workshops she carefully crafts for every camp. Let's learn more about Lucy now...
Hi, I’m Lucy! I’m the Activities Manager at The Strings Club, where I design and coordinate all the fun and engaging afternoon activities for our holiday camps. I’ve been with The Strings Club for several years now, and I love the variety and creativity the role allows. I live in Birmingham, where I’ve been based since I started my undergraduate degree, and I’m currently completing a PhD in Education. Outside of work, I live with my fiancée and our very cuddly cat, Chai.
My background is in education and child development. I’m a qualified primary school teacher, have a master's and bachelor's degree in Education, and now I’m working toward a PhD in Education, focusing on exploring children's experiences of exclusion from mainstream schools and how we can better support transitions. Over the years, I’ve had a lot of experience working with children in both academic and extracurricular settings. I actually started at The Strings Club as a camp assistant several years ago!
A lot of my inspiration comes from thinking about what I would have loved as a child. I also draw heavily on my teacher training and experience working with children to ensure that each activity is meaningful, inclusive, and age-appropriate. Plus, the feedback and energy from the children themselves constantly fuels new ideas!
I would say my number one tip is to find that balance between learning and fun. Kids thrive when they’re enjoying themselves, but it’s also important to nurture their curiosity and creativity. That’s why I always try to make my activities energy-filled and interactive, whilst making sure I am fostering children’s learning too!
Here's a taste of some of the activities that Lucy designs for The Strings Club camps...
Music is such a powerful tool – it’s everywhere, and it resonates with children of all ages. It boosts mood, supports mental health, and helps kids express themselves in ways that words sometimes can’t. Because it’s so universal, it blends beautifully into all sorts of activities, from movement to mindfulness, creative activities, and beyond.
I used to play both the piano and the violin, and while I’m a bit rusty now, I still love music and engage with it in other ways – mostly by singing enthusiastically in the car!
I enjoy a wide range of music, but at the moment I’m especially drawn to folk and indie rock. I love the poetry of the lyrics, and I love seeing them performed live – the atmosphere is always so warm and intimate.
In my spare time (and only when the weather is nice!) you’ll find me brushing up on my sailing skills! I love to sail with my family and I’ve spent a few summers in Wales and Greece navigating the open water.
What I love most about The Strings Club is how rewarding it is to create activities that will help develop children’s love of music and self-expression! The freedom I have to design a huge variety of fun and interesting activities is so fulfilling, and seeing the positive impact of this on the children who attend our camps keeps me inspired to keep creating more innovative and enjoyable experiences for them.
