About

Amy Coates is a Birmingham-based double bassist, composer, and improviser. She graduated from the music course at the University of Birmingham where she developed a passion for jazz and improvised music. As a member of the Birmingham Improvisers’ Orchestra, she recently premiered her own composition with the group, and has performed as part of the Stourbridge Festival of Improvised Music, alongside musicians such as Paul Dunmall, Sarah Farmer, and Andrew Woodhead.

Amy is an enthusiastic and experienced music educator, who has taught and facilitated music making for all ages and levels of experience: her work with B:Music B:And (formally Jazzlines), The Strings Club, and Quench Arts have all developed her teaching skills and adaptability. She is also a key member of the improvised and experimental music organisation Fizzle & TDE Promotions, where she has gained hands-on knowledge of the music industry.
