Meet Russell!

Meet our fantastic Holiday Camp teacher Russell! RVT-1866

This week we introduce you to our wonderful teacher Russell. Find out all about his musical journey, from learning his instrument to performing in front of 7000 people. Reading Russell’s interview might even inspire your child to start learning an instrument with our Term-Time Lessons!

Where did you study music?

I studied music at Goldsmiths, University of London where I specialised in film music and arranging for jazz & big bands. I was also a private student of bass guitarist Tom Herbert who was nominated for a Mercury Prize.

Tell us about your musical experience?

I currently play bass for The Film Orchestra where we play music from TV, Film and Video Games. I also play bass annually for the Norbury musical theatre adult group in Droitwich.

My previous experiences also include playing bass for pop artist Lauren Wright (BBC Introducing Regional Champion 2012), bass and vocals for soul artist Moko (Chase & Status) and bass for hip-hop collective Cantaloop.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

I enjoy being able to take musical ideas, breaking them down and reconstructing them into fun and engaging activities for learner enjoyment and processing. I really get a kick out of a learner who excels when they have previously been dubious about their initial musical talents.

Your biggest achievement/ most enjoyable musical experience so far?

My biggest achievement would be supporting Union J in 2013 in front of 7000 people. It was amazing!

Who is your favourite musician and why?

My favourite musician of all time has to be Prince. I’m astounded and inspired that one person can write, record, direct and play all instruments for multiple songs and albums that constantly grab your attention, no matter how many times they are played. I was lucky to see him live two years ago and it was the greatest live show I had ever been to, I teared up at Purple Rain at the end.

How did you start learning your instrument? Russell

The first time I picked up the bass guitar was when I was 19. At the time I was a failing actor working odd-jobs and wasn’t happy. I made a pledge to myself that I would obtain a music degree within five years and within ten years, be able to earn all of my income through music. I was criticised by many saying that I was too late or too old to learn music from scratch; however I proved them wrong! I had two lessons a week and practised the bass every day for at least four hours. I’m now 29 and I have my music degree, I earn all of my income through music and I have had some incredible live experiences on stage. Hard work really does pay off!

Top practice tip for our Strings Club children?

Practise all new exercises and songs at half speed until you are confident. Most importantly, don’t get impatient! This will give your brain time to learn properly and you won’t cause yourself unnecessary frustration or injury.

Thank you Russell – meet another member of our Strings Club team on our blog soon!

Congratulations Music Medal Nominees!

Congratulations to all those children nominated for a Music MedalScreenshot-143-1

This summer term, a whopping 38 children have been nominated for a prestigious Music Medals award, part of The Royal Schools of Music – and we couldn’t be more proud!

Children at our Term Time courses across London and Birmingham will be taking their Music Medal award very soon. From Copper right up to Platinum (equivelent to Grade 4 standard).

To help your child practise for their upcoming Music Medal award at home, our founder and violinistAmy shares her top practice tips!

Top Tips by Founder, Amy

1. Firstly, don’t panic. Music Medals are designed to be fun so enjoy it. You can only try your best!

2. Be prepared – know exactly what you will need to do in the exam.  Each exam includes a ensemble piecesolo pieceoption test. Teachers will have gone through this but if you or your little one are unsure ask!

3. Practice at home – I suggest practising before going to school. So wake up, have some breakfast and get your instrument out and have a play! If you’d prefer a lie in, practise when you get home from school. You don’t need to practice for hours and hours a day – just the amount of time you think it takes to get a bit better at playing your songs!

4. Play for family and friends – it’s always good (as well as lots of fun) to play your instrument for those you live with as well as in school. Why not ask to play in front of y

our class? It’s a bit scary I know but once you start playing, you’ll forget that people are there! Plus not everyone can play an instrument so you should be very proud of yourself that you can!

5. Finally be happy! Not everyone gets nominated for a Music Medal award – be very proud of yourself!

Perhaps your child has a few top tips themselves to share with us? If so, I’d love to hear them! Please send us an email here and we can share them soon!

 Good luck!

Music Medal Awards – Well Done Grace!

Well done to all children who took their music medal awards last term. We once again received fantastic results, with over 30 children earning a prestigious Music Medal Awardgrace 2

We would like to say an extra special, super congratulations to our Strings Club pupil Grace who received an Excellent in her Music Medal award!
Music Medals encourage children to celebrate the skills they have learnt during their time at The Strings Club and provide them with a true sense of achievement.
As partners with the Royal School of Music, any child enrolled on our guitar or violin term-time courses can work towards a Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum  Music Medal – accredited within the National Qualifications Framework.

Rather than the formalised setting of a grade exam, Music Medals are based at our Strings Club venues and children have to prepare a solo piece, an ensemble piece and also a short musicianship test which can vary from sigh-reading to making up a tune!
Whereas typically it might take over two years for a beginner to reach grade 1, Music Medals can be achieved every term – giving something really worthwhile for your child to practice towards!

Summer Term Music Medal nominations are being sent out to parents this week – so keep your eyes peeled! Closing date is Monday 6th June.

Practice for your music medal at our Holiday Camp!
